We’re living in an exciting time. The internet has completely changed the way we work, and there are more opportunities than ever to find a job that you love and make money doing it. Unfortunately, it’s also easier than ever to end up with something that isn’t quite what you wanted, so it takes some research and preparation to make sure you don’t get stuck with something you don’t enjoy or that doesn’t pay enough to keep your head above water. Here are five of the best ways to land the job you want in 2022.
Understand your career path
It is important to understand your career path. What is it that you want? What do you want your life to look like ten years from now? If you don’t know, then how can anyone else help you get there? The more clear and specific you are about what you want, the better chance you have of finding it. Take a good look at where you are today. How did you get here? Who helped you along the way?
First, evaluate where you want to be in five years: Where do I want my work/life balance to be in five years? Am I happy with my job security and level of responsibility at this point in my career? Is there a different type of company I’d like to work for but haven’t applied for yet? Second, assess where you are now: Where am I today with respect to these questions above? Do I need more time before looking for something new? Do I need to make changes internally first so that I can move into a new role externally or does the opportunity exist internally right now? Third, explore possible opportunities: To find an opportunity, think of people who could help you land one- whether they’re friends or acquaintances or family members- rather than waiting around for recruiters and headhunters to find you. Lastly, take an honest look at your skillset: After all, if you’re looking for a position outside your area of expertise or interest, honesty will go a long way when discussing salary and benefits upfront.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there
If you’re not getting as many interviews as you’d like, there are some things you can do to improve your chances. To start, make sure your resume is up-to-date and that it highlights your skills and qualifications. Include your work history, education, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities. Next, research the company where you want to work—their vision and mission statements will tell you what they value most in their employees. Make sure that your resume reflects those values so that when they see it they know you’ll be a good fit. Finally, network with people who have connections at companies where you would like to work. Introduce yourself at a networking event or send them an email with a simple introduction: Hello! My name is (name). I am looking for opportunities in (industry), and I heard from a friend that you’re well connected in this area. I’m curious if any of these opportunities are currently open? Thank you for your time and consideration!
After meeting someone new, follow up on LinkedIn with a quick note to thank them for their time or offer assistance on anything they may need help with. These tactics will increase your chances of getting called in for an interview and landing the job you want in 2022!
Think about what’s most important for your career success
It’s not enough to just have a plan for your future. To actually get that career of your dreams, you need a strategy. And while there are a lot of ways you can go about it, there are five things I recommend thinking about before taking any action.
* Know what you want: A surefire way to make sure you don’t end up somewhere you don’t belong is knowing exactly where you want to be. This means figuring out what kind of work environment appeals to you and what type of company culture aligns with who you are and what makes your heart sing.
Have more than one back-up plan
1. Network your way into a job – Social media is great for creating connections with potential employers, meeting new people who may be able to help you, and staying on top of the latest industry developments. 2. Update your resume and portfolio – Make sure you have an updated resume that highlights your accomplishments and work experience as well as an up-to-date portfolio of your design work or other material that shows off what makes you special. 3. Volunteer for projects at organizations you want to work for – Volunteering can give you a hands-on understanding of how things are done, provide valuable experience and skills relevant to the position, build relationships with team members and managers, and demonstrate commitment to a cause or organization. 4.
Get help from friends, family, and colleagues
Find someone who has a job that you’d like and ask them for help. Set up coffee dates, or even just conversations over email, so that you can learn about their career path and talk about your ambitions. Ask for introductions to people at companies that would be a good fit for you. Find people who are doing the work you want to do and ask them how they got there. Keep a file of everyone you meet with notes on what they told you. You might also want to keep in touch with these mentors by following them on social media. Every now and then, write an email saying hello. If you’re not sure what to say, send them something interesting from the news. Most importantly: continue networking with new people too! And don’t forget to post articles and cool things on LinkedIn if you have one. Remember, if it’s not worth posting, it’s not worth reading either. Follow publications such as Fast Company and WIRED on Twitter or Facebook so that you get alerts when they publish great stories. Don’t ever underestimate the power of staying connected with people through social media; this is one of the best ways to find out about jobs because employers will often advertise through posts as well as professional organizations online. Get involved in online communities related to your field and see if anyone needs help with anything – this is a great way to expand your network, make connections, and show off some skills. Finally, practice interviewing by going on informational interviews with people outside of your company (or go on a few interviews at different companies). Asking questions during the interview process is important – make sure you know what questions you should always ask. The most important thing you can do is follow up after the interview. Sending a thank-you note or email after meeting with somebody shows your enthusiasm and respect. Try to reach out every day if possible, but at least once every week, remembering to mention any mutual connections.
